John minto
Rugby Ball and John Minto
John Minto is a New Zealand activist who wanted to put a stop to racism. During the 1981 springbok he led protests to stop the springbok tour because South Africa at the time were was governed the rule of Apartheid which kept white and black people separate, and black marginalised.
They had a one race (white) rugby team and would only face one race teams so the All Blacks made it that only NZ European players could play for the All Blacks that tour.
It made a lot of New Zealanders very annoyed from all different races. They tried as hard as they could to stop the tour. John Minto formed H.A.R.T, Halt All Racist Tours, a group of people trying to stop all racist sports tours. The tour was not cancelled so at the start of the 2 tour hundreds of people ran on the field. John Minto was one of the people a lot of rugby fans threw stuff at John. The game was canceled as the police tried to take them off the field; later the group of All Black fans chased John and attacked him. His wife bought him a blue bicycle helmet to keep him safe!
Although they disrupted games the protests were not able to stop the tour.
However it was a success in highlighting the issue of racism to the world. Apartheid was a law until in south Africa the early 1990s.
